On an east-facing plot the road runs along the east side. Morning sun reaches the front of the house, which Vastu treats as especially auspicious, but the layout needs some care to keep the north-east open and light.
Morning light
The east front gets bright morning sun that is gentle by late morning. Living rooms, pooja rooms and dining areas facing east are pleasant through most of the day. Unlike a west-facing house, the front does not overheat in the afternoon, so you can use generous glazing.
Entrance position
On the east side, the entrance is preferred in the north-east half of the frontage. Of the nine traditional padas this broadly means the zones of Jayant and Mahendra (the third and fourth from the north-east corner). Avoid the south-east corner of the east wall for the main door.
Typical room placement
- Living room: east or north-east, with the main door.
- Pooja room: north-east corner. Keep it light and uncluttered.
- Kitchen: south-east, which falls at the front-left on an east plot.
- Master bedroom: south-west, at the back.
- Staircase and overhead tank: south or west.
- Toilets: north-west or west.
The common conflict
On an east plot the kitchen (south-east) and the living room compete for the front. The usual solution: a living room in the north-east half with the main door, and a kitchen in the south-east half with a small window to the road. Parking goes into the north-east setback only if it stays open and uncovered. A heavy covered porch in the north-east is best avoided.
